The Princess Bride Star Mandy Patinkin Shares His Passion for Song on Feb. 7 at The Carpenter Center With Broadway Classics and Favorites by Randy Newman, Harry Chapin, and Rufus Wainwright
LONG BEACH, CA — The Carpenter Performing Arts Center on the campus of California State University, Long Beach welcomes acclaimed actor, singer, and storyteller Mandy Patinkin to the stage on Saturday, February 7 at 8 p.m. Mandy Patinkin in Concert: Being Alive with Adam Ben-David on Piano features Patinkin performing his favorite Broadway tunes, from Irving Berlin to Stephen Sondheim—along with iconic American songs by Randy Newman, Harry Chapin, Rufus Wainwright and more. Through music and storytelling, Mandy captures the love, resilience, and challenges of life in this powerful and passionate musical journey. Mandy Patinkin’s performance caps the Carpenter Center’s Wit & Wisdom Series this season.
“Whether you’ve come to love Mandy Patinkin from The Princess Bride or from his wildly popular social media posts, you have to experience him live on stage,” says Center Executive Director Megan Kline. “Mandy’s an utterly captivating force for celebrating the joys and struggles of being alive in this moment.”
Accompanying Mandy on piano is Adam Ben-David, a graduate of the Juilliard School and an arranger, music director, conductor, and pianist on Broadway for more than two decades. Adam’s credits include The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, and Wicked among many others, and he has accompanied numerous artists including Kelli O’Hara, Jarrod Spector, James Taylor, Patti LuPone, and Megan Hilty.
About Mandy Patinkin
Mandy Patinkin earned a Tony Award for his role as Che in Evita, and a Tony nomination for Sunday in the Park with George. His wide-ranging stage credits include Falsettos, The Secret Garden, The Wild Party, Compulsion, and Paradise Found. Among the highlights of his film and television work—which includes Yentl, Homeland, Criminal Minds, and an Emmy for Chicago Hope—Patinkin’s role as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride, continues to be adored by generations of fans. As a recording artist on CBS Records, Patinkin has released two solo albums, as well as three digital albums on Nonesuch. His most personal project, Mamaloshen, a collection of traditional, classic, and contemporary songs sung entirely in Yiddish won the Deutschen Schallplattenpreis, Germany’s equivalent of the Grammy Award.
Along with his wife, the stage actress Kathryn Grody, Patinkin found acclaim online during the pandemic with social media posts that offered honest, personal, and humorous revelations into the couple’s lives. The pair have recently launched a new podcast, Don’t Listen to Us, an advice show for advice-skeptics and wisdom-lovers filled with chaos and wisdom on how to survive our world.

Convenient parking is available directly in front of the Carpenter Center in lot G12. All parking lots on campus, including lot G12, are operated by CSULB’s Parking and Transportation Services, which set all parking fees. The Carpenter Center does not earn any portion of the collected fees. Parking fees this season remain at $10 after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and $10 all day on weekends.
