“Tribute: Guardians of Street Dance” marks the 20th anniversary of Versa-Style Dance Company, celebrating the legacy and evolution of Hip Hop and street dance. Debuting on the Carpenter Center's dance stage, this uplifting and energetic performance pays homage to Hip Hop and street dance artists including Rennie Harris, Damita Jo Freeman, and Toni Basil, as well as late legends such as Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Marjory Smarth. With photo and video elements woven into high-energy choreography, the piece honors the roots and future of styles like Hip Hop, house, popping, locking, and more. A moving tribute to both renowned and unsung innovators, the evening promises a powerful celebration of dance culture.
Versa-Style is a 501 C 3 non-profit organization and dance ensemble that consists of committed and conscientious artists representing the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles.
Founded in 2005 by Los Angeles natives and co-artistic directors Jackie Lopez aka Miss Funk and Leigh Foaad aka Breeze-lee, Versa-Style Street Dance Company was created to promote, empower, and celebrate the artistry of Hip Hop and street dance culture. Named “Los Angeles’ Best Dance Troupe for Hip Hop Empowerment” by LA Weekly and Red Bull Magazine's “Heroes of the Year 2019” , Versa-Style is recognized for its electrifying performances and inspiring engagement activities for schools and local communities. Consisting of committed, highly skilled street dance artists and educators representative of the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles, Versa-Style Street Dance Company harnesses the exhilarating energy of street dance onto the concert stage for an unforgettable evening of dance.
