First Person: Seeing America

Sat, July 2, 2011 at 8pm

"Gives audiences new ways to imagine, not just great works of art, but the land and people of a country shaped by unending change." —Neal Conan

This 4th of July—before the fireworks and barbeques—experience the defining moments that shaped this land of the free and home of the brave, as the gritty determination of extraordinary people are illuminated in this inspirational and moving performance.

First Person: Seeing America combines iconic photographs from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mathew Brady's searing pictures of the Civil War and Walker Evans's haunting portraits from the Great Depression—as well as images of the American West, Slavery, and incredible photographs from 1900-1950s. The music of Ensemble Galilei and narration by radio host Neal Conan and actor Lily Knight create a remarkable and powerful performance.

The program will include traditional Irish, Scottish, Early music and new compositions. Prose and poetry by Jim Harrison, Studs Terkel, Stanley Kunitz, Ted Kooser, and James Agee. Native Americans including Chief Seattle, African Americans such as Frederick Douglass and Lucille Clifton, and images by Walker Evans, Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz.
